I WAKE EARLY AND IMMEDIATELY check the security app. Last night, I watched Avery snuggle beneath the comforter on my sofa and sleep as if she hadn’t slept in weeks.

I fell asleep watching her, but now I’m awake and can’t find her my pulse quickens. Last night I logged in and out of the app so many times, wrestling with the appropriateness of watching her, but every time I logged out, like a drug, I craved more and soon logged back in to watch her lips part as she exhaled and made light snuffling sounds. She looked completely adorable, and I liked the vision of her resting in my home.

The events of yesterday posed more questions about Avery than they answered. Why was she using my machine and bath tub? Where does she live, and is this a temporary situation? Does she earn enough for the launderette? Could she be homeless? The thought choked me like a vice around my neck. Since she showed up at my place with cuts and bruises, I’ve felt protective of her and my concern is not diminishing. It’s getting worse.

Eventually I gave into curiosity and rewound the recording. At 06:09 she woke from her slumber, after an epic eleven hours sleeping, used the bathroom, weighed flour and mixed eggs, filling muffin containers, then, while they were baking, she entered my office, sitting in my high-backed leather swivel chair and moving the mouse. Her brows puckered as she viewed the password-controlled screen saver, and it made me wonder why she had interest in my computer. After leaving my office, she packed her laundry, packaged up three muffins for herself, which she put inside her handbag, and left the others cooling on a tray at the island. She was about to walk out the door, then paused, returned to the kitchen, into the pantry, where she took my bag of Haribo sweets and put them in her bag. She slipped away as if she were never there in the first place.

She took my sweets?!

During the entire journey back to London, I contemplate whether I somehow mention that I know she was there, that it’s okay, and she can use my bathroom or my washing machine whenever she needs to—but she mustn’t ever leave me without Haribo’s—or if I should keep my mouth shut and keep watching.
